CHURCH (SAN ONOFRE)
Church is one of the most welcoming places to get comfortable in the water.
Perfect for building confidence, connecting with members, and learning the flow of the lineup in a more approachable setting.
Church is one of the club’s core gathering zones and home of the annual Military Surf Contest each October. It is known as one of the more approachable places on this stretch of coast, making it a strong place for newer members to build confidence, spend time in the water, and get comfortable reading the lineup.
What new members should know before paddling out
Church is often seen as one of the friendlier and more manageable places to surf in the area, but that does not mean it should be taken lightly. It is still ocean, conditions still change, and members should always take a few minutes to watch the water before heading out.
For newer surfers, Church is a great place to practice timing, positioning, and lineup awareness without the same level of pressure found at more demanding breaks. On smaller days it can be an ideal place to grow, but it is still important to know where people are taking off, where the inside section is breaking, and how currents are moving before paddling out.
Stay aware
- Take a few minutes to study the lineup before entering the water.
- Look for where surfers are taking off and where waves are closing out on the inside.
- Even on mellow days, currents and crowd levels can shift throughout the session.
- Communicate clearly, respect the lineup, and avoid paddling straight into the busiest zone.
- If you are still learning the spot, ask another member where the safest entry and exit points are.
